Paul Bunyan Fine Art at Alley Culture
Alley Culture, Detroit, Michigan
American Icon American Myth
April 21-May 13, 2006
Alley Culture, Detroit, Michigan
The first Michigan stories of Paul Bunyan in print were in the August 10, 1906 issue of the Press in Oscoda, Michigan. To mark this 100 year anniversary, Paul Bunyan Fine Art served as curator for Alley Culture's presentation of American Icon American Myth. With works by Michigander Matthew Hanna and Pacific Northwest artists Jeff Gerber, Bob Jordan, James Milostan and Hiroko Sakurai, the Paul Bunyan theme and its futurity was the focus of the exhibition. The hero of a century ago has become an anti-hero in the new millennium. Paul Bunyan Fine Art explored this abandonment of one of America's greatest demigods and artistic subjects. Working to reinstate this truly American legend, American Icon American Myth presented souvenir collages of readymade myths.
